Despite there being no legal basis supporting non-vets performing Category 2 procedures, the RCVS has stated that there would be no public interest in prosecuting vets who collaborate with suitably qualified EDTs to perform non-invasive (Categories 1 and 2) procedures.

Ensure you know whether or not any EDT that you are collaborating with is qualified to perform Category 2 procedures (i.e. has a provisionally “Defra approved” qualification - BEVA/BVDA or WWAED).

The BEVA/BVDA examination is open to trainee EDTs and vets who can demonstrate that they have undergone structured approved training which includes a case log of 300 equine dental cases of which 40 are considered “Advanced” requiring collaboration with a veterinary surgeon and which are deemed Category 2 Procedures. If you are asked to sedate for a trainee EDT building up their advanced case log, you should ideally have some expertise in dentistry and you certainly should be aware of your responsibilities as a veterinary surgeon working with paraprofessionals. 

BAEDT have a student membership, full details and current enrolled members can be found at BAEDT Students. Ideally student members should compile their advanced case log of 40 cases requiring sedation and veterinary input for pathology other than straightforward sharp enamel points under the supervision of their qualified BAEDT mentor. 

It is paramount to ascertain that the individual has appropriate insurance.
