British Equestrian’s 2024 State of the Nation report highlights key issues for the equine community.
Financial strain continues to affect horse owners, with vet costs flagged as a top concern. Riding schools are facing workforce shortages and rising costs, while new research reveals worrying levels of poor employment practices and mental health challenges across the wider equestrian workforce. Public trust in equestrian sport remains moderate. Concerns centre on transparency, elitism, and equine welfare in competition contexts.
On a more positive note, participation is rising. Nearly 286,000 adults now take part in equestrian activity twice a month, and almost 199,000 children and young people ride weekly, including those on free school meals or with disabilities. Federation memberships are also up by 11.7%. These trends reflect the sector’s resilience and growing relevance, but also underline the need for continued focus on safety, welfare, and inclusive access.
