Veterinary Surgeon - Churchfield Equine Clinic - South Yorkshire

Vet
28 May 2025 BEVA

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team at Churchfield Equine Clinic. Do you want to work with clinical freedom and under your own initiative whilst still having the backup of experienced vets and certificate holders?

Location:

We are based in the glorious rolling Pennines near Penistone South Yorkshire. Not far from the busy city of Sheffield we are 5 minutes from the M1 motorway yet rural enough to enjoy the relaxation and leisure facilities on our doorstep; the Trans-Pennine trail is nearby with numerous reservoirs and hill walks to enjoy.

The Practice:

Churchfield Equine Clinic is a 3.5 FTE equine practice. Although we are part of a mixed brand, the equine clinic has recently rebranded, and all vets at the clinic are exclusively equine. Our facilities include six inpatient stables, a large barn and workup area, theatre and  recovery box. We perform our own routine surgeries as needed, supported by experienced anaesthetists;  our clinical director holds a certificate in soft tissue surgery.

The clinic has recently undergone a period of refurbishment to our lunge arena and trot up facilities as well as our barn, theatre and recovery box. We have ambitious plans to continue to upgrade the clinic further to provide our clients with the best service possible. We have grass paddocks for turnout of inpatients as required.

Your colleagues:

You will have confidence in having the backup of colleagues who have worked extensively in referral practice. We pride ourselves on being forward thinking and evidence based; all vets are encouraged to engage in CPD and further learning; we are lucky to be part of IVC Evidensia giving access to a wealth of skill and information to support your career. You chose your area of interest; we will support you.

We have bi-monthly clinical meetings where we share ideas, discuss cases and support each other. We act positively to reduce our antibiotic and anthelmintic use with strategies and schemes to support decision making. We engage pro-actively with our clients on routine health matters such as dentistry and worming through our popular Equine Health Plan.

On Call:

The on-call rota is a generous 1:8 supported by Equicall, there is always support at the end of the phone if required! There is a reduction to a 1:4 during the AI season if mares are kept for frozen AI but this is seldom required, this extra is for inpatient cover only.

Equipment:

We have all the toys you would expect to allow you to provide the outstanding care we need you to, if there’s something we don’t have you feel you need just ask!

Gastroscope/Endoscope

In house lab: Biochem/Haem/automated FWEC/Microscopy/PCV/TP

New diode laser

New X-ray machine and new ultrasound scanner with PACS system

New Equisafe stocks

New anaesthetic machine

The Role:

The role is first opinion and ambulatory with ample scope to perform/support/learn clinic based activities when they occur. We are seeking an experienced colleague either from an ambulatory practice or hospital internship but are willing to be flexible for the right candidate; team integration and a confident positive personality are prerequisites.

There is room for all areas of interest although experience/knowledge in lameness diagnostics and treatment whilst by no means essential would make you a preferred choice. Substantial support and encouragement will be provided for the right candidate.

We work a 40hr 4.5 day week with a fixed half day off in lieu of a weeknight on call; even during Equicall weeks. Working hours are typically 9-5 with plenty of time for admin, although this can occasionally be a later finish in the busy summer months. We give one day back as TOIL for doing a weekend on call to be taken when desired.

An excellent package is available, A laptop and mobile phone are provided with access to a pool vehicle for calls.  A company vehicle can be provided  if desired. We would consider a part time role or reduced hours for the right candidate.

In the first instance email your CV to ian.macpherson@churchfieldvets.co.uk. Please come and see us or call for an informal chat.
