Maternity Leave Cover - North West Equine Vets

We are looking for an experienced equine veterinarian to join our 15-vet team based in Cumbria/North Yorkshire for the busy summer season, starting March/April 2026.

North West Equine Vets is an independently owned, first opinion ambulatory practice covering a wide, and very beautiful area including the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks. With the good transport links of the M6 and west coast mainline you could equally be in Manchester or Edinburgh in a couple of hours.

Operating from three clinics and covering a beautiful area including the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks NWEV is a proudly independent 100% equine practice with 15 full/part time vets and 3 RVN’s. Also included in our ranks are several certificate holders. Our clients range from professional National Hunt trainers, to weekend leisure riders.

Our caseload is largely first opinion ambulatory, but we try very hard to work cases through to completion in-house and provide surgical facilities for routine GA procedures and enjoy the support of an external orthopaedic surgeon. All vets have access to the usual range of mobile diagnostic equipment; multiple battery DR’s, ultrasound scanners, shockwave, video gastroscopy and URT endoscopy, surgical laser and power dentistry.

Work vehicle, fuel card, phone, and RCVS/VDS/BEVA/BVA membership and CPD allowance included. 25 days holiday + Bank Holidays (pro rata. Salary commensurate with experience. Accommodation is potentially available if required.

This post is ideally for a 4.5 day week position (whether you take off 1/2 a day a week or a full day a fortnight is up to you), taking an equal part of our 1:6 OoH Rota. There is no sole-charge as two vets are on all each weeknight/weekend.

Whilst this position is currently being offered on a temporary basis there is scope for a permanent position for the right candidate. Whilst a full-time applicant would be preferred part-time/flexible working would also be considered.

Outside of work we have hikers, beekeepers, runners, cyclists, rock climbers and plenty of riders and consider ourselves to be a friendly and welcoming bunch. With the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales on our doorstep you would have plenty of time to explore a stunning part of the country. Equally, with the good transport links of the M6 and west coast mainline you could equally be in Manchester or Edinburgh in a couple of hours.

If you would like any more information on the practice, the role, or wish to pop in for a visit please contact Richard Knight on 07785 617127 or richard.knight@nwev.co.uk

We are committed to equality of opportunity for all and welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds

We look forward to hearing from you!
