The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) is inviting applications for a new Trustee to join our Board of Management (BoM) when Fran James’s term comes to an end in September.
The Role of a BEVA Trustee
In addition to their duties as a Council member, BEVA Trustees have extra liabilities and responsibilities. Trustees are members of the Board of Management, the governing body that ensures BEVA’s activities are aligned with our charitable objectives and compliant with all relevant laws and regulations. Trustees are ultimately accountable for the strategic direction, financial oversight, and effective governance of the Association.
The role will include:
• Ensuring that BEVA acts in the best interest of its members, the profession, and equine welfare;
• Overseeing financial management, risk management, and legal compliance;
• Contributing to key decision-making at the highest level;
Expectations and Commitment
This is a role that requires both time and active engagement. As a Trustee, you will normally be expected to:
• Attend four Board of Management meetings per year (April, summer, October, December);
• Chair one committee, providing leadership and direction in a specific area of BEVA’s work;
• Actively contribute to a second committee as a Council member;
• Attend the two full Council meetings annually (Summer and Winter);
• Stay informed, prepared and engaged in ongoing governance matters between meetings.
The initial term is three years, with the option to renew for a further three years. The role is voluntary, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.
Given the nature of the position, applications are particularly encouraged from individuals who are either currently serving on BEVA Council or have previously served, as prior knowledge of BEVA’s structure and operations will be invaluable.
Our selection process aims to ensure that the collective skills and experience across the Board of Management are well balanced and sufficient to effectively oversee the charity’s work. Applications will be reviewed by the Board of Management and an interview process may be used to help select the new trustee.
How to apply
Applicants must be current BEVA members.
Applications must include:
• A personal statement of approximately 250 words, outlining why you would like to become a Trustee and how your skills and experience can benefit BEVA;
• The support of two BEVA members.
• A headshot (Your headshot will be used to assist the Board of Management (BoM) in recognising and identifying applicants during the review process. If you are appointed as a Trustee, your headshot may also be used in official BEVA communications, such as announcements to members and the wider equine veterinary community.)
Applications close on 2 July 2025.
Depending on the number of applications, an interview process may follow.
