Learning Opportunities:

This is a rotating equine internship between surgery (including lameness examination and diagnostic imaging), anesthesia, internal medicine and ambulatory. The hospital has a significant elective surgical caseload and this internship has a significant surgical emphasis. Dedicated out of hours rotation during the season.

• Providing surgical assistance and ample opportunity to scrubbing in to surgeries on a regular basis

• Preparing horses for surgery

• Proficiency in anaesthesia

• Care of hospitalised patients

• Acquisition and interpretation of radiographic, ultrasound and nuclear scintigraphic imaging.

• Busy surgical caseload inc. arthroscopy, laparoscopy, transphyseal screw placement, fracture fixation, urogenital procedures, upper airway surgeries and emergencies inc. colic and caesarean sections.

• Basic nerve blocks

• Endoscopy, gastroscopy and dynamic endoscopy

• Weekly participation and presentation in journal clubs

• Encouragement and support to present case report at national veterinary conference.

This internship is very suited to recent graduates with a strong interest in equine surgery. Vets who are considering further advanced training in the field of equine surgery or equine anaesthesia would gain exposure to a large and varied surgical caseload.

Completion of a previous rotating hospital internship would be very beneficial.
