Rachel Tucker has been awarded honorary membership of BEVA in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the equine veterinary profession. Rachel was presented with honorary membership by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who is patron of BEVA, at BEVA Congress on Friday 12 September 2025.

Rachel Tucker is a European Specialist in Equine Surgery and senior clinician at Liphook Equine Hospital. She has advanced clinical standards while becoming a respected role model for the next generation of veterinary professionals.

Earlier this year, she became the first UK surgeon to perform an Equine Foraminotomy, a groundbreaking procedure to treat cervical spinal issues. After training with Dr Jan-Hein Swagemakers in Germany, she undertook extensive cadaver work and visited human and small animal surgical centres to safely bring the technique into equine use. Her dedication is transforming the management of previously under-recognised neck problems in horses.

Nikki Hunt, RVN from Liphook Equine Hospital, who nominated Rachel for honorary membership, said: “Rachel combines surgical expertise with integrity and empathy. As a mother, windsurfer, and pioneering surgeon in a male-dominated field, she continues to challenge stereotypes and mentor others—particularly younger female vets and nurses—through her calm leadership and patient-centred care.”

“Few individuals embody innovation, leadership and compassion in equine practice as powerfully as Rachel Tucker,” said BEVA President Bruce Bladon. “We are proud to award her with honorary membership In recognition of her clinical excellence, patient dedication, and inspirational impact across the profession.”

Honorary membership is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to the equine veterinary profession. Individuals are nominated by BEVA members and then approved by BEVA Council and at the BEVA AGM. They receive free BEVA membership for life.
