General Practitioner - Veterinary Associates Equine - Auckland New Zealand

Vet
23 Oct 2025 BEVA

Veterinary Associates Equine is an independently owned equine practice in beautiful New Zealand. We are seeking a well-rounded general practitioner to join our 3 veterinarian division in Kumeu, approximately 30 minutes northwest of central Auckland. We are open to a newer practitioner, though some experience is preferred. Our practice consists of three divisions - Kumeu, an ambulatory practice in Warkworth (further north), and a large referral hospital and ambulatory group in Karaka (south Auckland). You get all the benefits of a large practice group (around 20 vets in total and all the usual toys) with all the perks of working in a smaller team.

We are in a sport horse dominant region with a hugely diverse caseload. Our clients are fantastic and often happy to pursue gold-standard care for their beloved equine partners. If you have a particular interest in dentistry, reproduction, lameness, or medicine, we have the caseload to support it - you will not find our day-to-day practice to be routine.

VA prides ourselves on a collaborative, supportive environment - no in-house competition. We benefit from two boarded surgeons and internal medicine specialists and a wide ranging group of experienced ambulatory vets who are always happy to lend a supportive hand. In Kumeu, we are a fully ambulatory practice, though we are looking to be able to work from a dedicated facility in the near future. Our division in Karaka boasts a large, purpose built hospital. Get all the benefits of in-house referral - high level communication with our specialist team, the ability to follow your cases in person as much as possible, and continuity of care when those ponies come home.

We are dedicated to continuing education and supporting veterinarians with high-level professional satisfaction. We hold weekly journal clubs, monthly topic rounds, send our vets to CE/CPD all over the world, and encourage our team to pursue their areas of interest.

VA is committed to fostering a happy workplace - a sense of humor and strong communication skills are a must, as is a horse-first and team-focused attitude.

A vehicle is provided, a competitive salary will be commensurate with experience, and additional remuneration is earned through after hours work. In addition, paid licensure, a CE/CPD budget, cell phone package, paid NZVA/NZEVA membership, and paid professional liability are all part of the benefits package. New Zealand offers a publicly-funded national healthcare system and an employer-matched retirement savings plan known as “KiwiSaver.” Four weeks of annual leave are also included with additional time off in exchange for after hours work. After hours is shared equally in the division.

Never considered working abroad before? Let New Zealand change your mind. The visa process is pretty straightforward, and we have a wide range of international practitioners already here. Kumeu is in one of many wine-growing regions, with easy access to gorgeous beaches, hiking, and any outdoor sport you can imagine. The schools are great, and it’s a wonderful community to be a part of. Many of our team enjoy equestrian pursuits of their own. Being in Kumeu, we are far enough out of town to enjoy some peace and quiet, but close enough to get into the city for an evening.
