Equine Surgeon (Breeding Season August to January) – Avenel Equine Hospital 2025
Scone Equine Group (SEG) is seeking a seasonal equine surgeon, to be based at Avenel Equine Hospital. Applicants must have, or be eligible to sit, appropriate qualifications to allow registration as an Australian Specialist in Equine Surgery. These include FANZCVS, Dipl ACVS or Dipl ECVS.
SEG includes Scone Equine Hospital, Equine Podiatry and Lameness Centre, Avenel Equine Hospital and Tamworth Equine Veterinary Clinic. We are the largest equine practice in the southern hemisphere, employing approximately 50 equine veterinarians during the breeding season, The group boasts an internationally recognised team of veterinarians, including 10 specialists in Equine Surgery, 7 specialists in Equine Medicine and 1 Theriogenologist.
Avenel Equine Hospital performs approximately 500 major surgical procedures annually. The surgical load is biased towards thoroughbreds, although we have a significant number of non-racing performance clients. The new surgical facility, completed in 2023, is well equipped to perform all elective and emergency procedures. Only advanced diagnostics are referred.
Avenel Equine Hospital is located in the heart of Victoria’s Thoroughbred breeding region, 1 hour from Melbourne Airport and 1.5 hours from the Melbourne CBD. The practice offers a comprehensive ambulatory service to equine clients in the local area as well as a Surgical and Intensive Care Facility. We currently employ 15 equine veterinarians including three experienced Surgeons and two Medicine Specialists. Our facilities are purpose-built and there are dedicated standing, colic and sterile theatres, supported by three recovery rooms. There is stabling for 38 horses, spread over four barns; day patients, elective in-hospital patients, an Intensive Care facility and a dedicated Isolation facility. The facility has a hard straight trot-up area, large soft lunge ring, small hard lunge ring and multiple diagnostic rooms.
The successful applicant will be one of three equine surgeons. Our surgeons in Avenel have a wealth of experience and are willing to provide help, support and training.
The position is seasonal starting with flexible start and finish dates around the thoroughbred breeding season. An attractive salary package is offered with the commencement date in July/ August 2025.
